How To: The Foil Method

Glitter polish- so pretty but a total PITA to remove! With that in mind I decided to do this How To tutorial on removing those stubborn glitter nail polishes you just can't resist. For me the best way to remove glittery nail polishes is The Foil Method.

The nail polish I'm removing in this tutorial is China Glaze Dorothy Who? with a coat of Seche Vite.

First of all you're going to need:
  • Cotton pads
  • Aluminium foil
  • Nail polish remover
  • Scissors
Optional:
  • Cuticle Cream/Oil
  • Paper to rest on

Step 1: Cut your cotton pads to size. I cut my cotton pads in half, however it is up to you on whether to cut them and what size to pick. Simply make sure the cotton pad size is large enough to easily cover your nail and wrap around your finger slightly.

Step 2: Soak your cotton pad with nail polish remover and then place it over your nail.

Step 3: Cut your aluminium foil into a smaller size that it suitable to enclose your nail polish soaked cotton pad around your finger. Completely wrap the aluminium foil around the cotton pad and your nail like a thimble.

Once you know a suitable size for the aluminium foil needed to wrap around your finger it is best to cut all ten strips that you will need. This makes it easier to just soak a pad and then quickly wrap the pre-cut aluminium foil around your nail.

Step 4:  Then complete Steps 2-3 encasing all ten fingers. your hands should look like this! Leave the foil on for 5-8 minutes - it varies depending on how thick the glitter is.

Step 5: After your allocated time has passed press down and remove the aluminium foil and the cotton pad. And presto, all your glitter nail polish should be on the pad and your nail is nice and clean!

When your finished you might have a few stray bits of glitter that you need to remove but nothing that a quick swipe with a nail polish remover moistened cotton wipe can't remove. Once finished all your nails will be clean and glitter-free!

Since you have soaked your nails in nail polish for quite awhile its highly likely your cuticles will be dry. It is recommended when using this method that you apply a cuticle cream after removal to restore the moisture.

This is a quick and easy way to remove glitter from your nails - if a bit fiddly trying to wrap your second hand once you've done you're first. No more pressing and scrubbing with a cotton wipe to remove your thick glitters - just wrap and wait!
